3D Modelling - Assignment 2

Image
Assignment 2 is complete! For this one, I chose to model a telescope. I've always been interested in astronomy and antiques, so an antique telescope was the perfect choice. Because I have never done any sort of 3D modelling, I wanted to make this project non-organic to get a good basic grip on the concepts and tools. That way I didn't have to worry about whether or not it was smooth enough or detailed enough for something naturalistic. I started out with the telescope itself, using spice planes and the extrude tool to create the brass rings. Then I moved onto the stand. The base was made out of a cylinder and a lot of slice planes, just like the telescope, to get the right look. The legs were made out of an elongated chamfer box. The end caps and the sections were again made with slice planes and the extrude tool.  The most complicated bit was definitely the two rails on the side that connect the telescope to the stand. At first I tried booleans, but that didn't give me the...

3D Modelling - Assignment 1

Image
Assignment 1 is complete! I've explained the concept and story behind this idea in my previous work in progress post. Here it is in Google Earth, with a view of the digitized Sleeping Lady mountain (Mount Susitna) in the background! A little bit of a closer view in Google Earth Originally, I had drawn up my own texture for the model. It was a grainy grey texture, intended to look like concrete or granite. I found that it was too fine and small and, no matter what I did, wouldn't show up when importing the model into SketchUp. I played around with a couple different textures, and found that this marble one ended up fitting the best.   I don't have a whole lot else to say. I've already covered most of my thought process in another post, and by then the only thing I fiddled around with was the texture mapping. The model itself is sort of funky looking, but I find myself liking it like that. I think it's funky in a good way.

Animation 1A - Final Assignment

Image
Final animation is done! I don't have a whole lot to say about it. After I had finalized my idea, the work went pretty smoothly.   Originally, I had planned for the subject to be a flower and a bee, but I realized that it didn't quite fit with the brief parameters. I switched to the cloud pretty early on, so it didn't cost me any time in the end. I think the cloud is also better suited for showing emotion. It's a common idea for the weather to reflect emotion, but it really does work well.  As far as process, I was very loose. I started out with a couple key frames/storyboard frames and just filled it in where I saw necessary. That let me play around with movements and details without having to worry about timing with a specific soundtrack.  There are still some funky bits, but overall I'm ok with how it turned out.

Animation 1A - Reel
